The API project is comprised of the migration of the existing read API to a full REST architecture and adding write capabilities. This would unlock plenty of new possibilities for Consul, we can already foresee some like
• Alternative interfaces, away from the current web-only interface we have. WhatsApp (heavily requested), SMS voting, mobile apps etc
• Easier integrations with existing tech stack (government website, financial planning, national authentication...)
• Possibility to integrate properly with other civic open source tools (sensemaker, Pol.is)
Beyond new use cases, an API would make custom developments built on singular forks far more replicable and lowering the barrier for cities to share and adopt each other's innovations across the ecosystem. We could even think of a plug-in repository of new features, context adaptation and UX themes.
